South Whidbey schools enjoy community support, passing its maintenance and operation levies with regularity.

The district's most recent construction program, a $20 million expansion project at South Whidbey High School on Maxwelton Road, was completed in 1997.  The work added a second gymnasium; a state-of-the-art, 600-seat auditorium; a weight room and other amenities to the school.

Earlier major projects added a science room, art room and multi-purpose facility to the middle school, a media center to the primary school, and a modern transportation facility.

There are about 2,000 students divided among the school districts five schools. The middle school is in Langley; the primary, intermediate and high schools are spaced along Maxwelton Road; and the alternative school is at Bayview.  Here is an outline of the student age breakdown by school.

South Whidbey Primary School: Kindergarten through 2nd grade

South Whidbey Intermediate School: 3rd Grade through 5th grade

Langley Middle School: 6th Grade through 8th Grade

South Whidbey High School: 9th Grade through 12th Grade.

South Whidbey Alternative Schools

Bayview School
District Office 360-221-6100
Bayview Office 360-321-2343

High school students from South and Central Whidbey who prefer a different style of learning have a good choice in Bayview School.

The alternative school offers a small student/teacher ratio, a hands-on approach to independent learning.  It is accredited by the Washington State Board of Education.

The high school is house in the historical Bayview School building, which has been lovingly cared for by the community through the decades.  Each year, Bayview School graduates a class of about a half-dozen students.

Enrollment is approximately 80 students, several of whom had dropped out of South Whidbey or Coupeville high schools or were at risk of leaving early. Many find a satisfying educational experience at Bayview, which emphasizes the completion of a student portfolio as a graduation requirement.  School staff also place emphasis on arts programs, and encourage students to work and learn in the school's large garden.

Students attend school from 8:40am to 11:40am and 1:20 pm to 3:20 pm Monday through Thursday, and work on independent projects on Friday.
